Albertsons has laid off workers in its corporate and division support workforce in an effort to lower expenses, a spokesperson for the grocer confirmed in a Wednesday email to Grocery Dive.
The company would not disclose the number of employees it laid off, or when it did so, but did state that “no store-level associates” were impacted.
A company spokesperson told Boise Dev that Albertsons will transfer some of the roles to individuals in other countries.
Albertsons also said it is providing “comprehensive support to all impacted associates,” which includes severance packages with extended benefits and career support services.
The layoffs come after the grocery company posted modest third-quarter results following its failed merger with Kroger. During its earnings call on Jan. 8, CEO Vivek Sankaran told investors that Albertsons has “got to accelerate our growth rates to compete with the very, very best in the industry.” He also said the chain is looking to cut $1.5 billion in spending over the next three years.
