Midwest grocer Fareway Stores announced it will purchase two Brothers Market locations in Iowa. The terms of the deal, which is expected to close in March, were not disclosed.
The stores, located at 1022 Skyler St. in Denver, Iowa, and 930 Commercial St. in Lisbon, Iowa, will close for several months to undergo renovations. Fareway noted that, after renovations, the Ace Hardware inside the Denver store and the Cabin Coffee shop inside the Lisbon location will remain.
The regional grocer also said it contacted employees at both stores to “discuss employment opportunities both during the transition and after reopening,” according to the press release.
Fareway operates around 140 locations in a seven-state region, with Iowa serving as home to nearly 120 of those stores.
Fareway’s growth since 2022 has focused on states that neighbor Iowa, its home state. This comes as competition in the region intensifies from the likes of Walmart, Hy-Vee and Dollar General.
While family-owned Brothers Market is parting ways with two of its locations, the independent grocer will continue running 14 stores across Iowa, Kansas and Missouri.
