With Christmas just a few weeks away, Instacart has added the ability for customers on its app to buy holiday trees — fresh-cut or fake — for same-day delivery from grocers and retailers, the company announced Monday.
Holiday trees, especially large ones with sharp needles, can be difficult items to transport. Daniel Danker, chief product officer at Instacart, said the new offering aims to help people “spend more time holiday-ing and less time hauling."
Delivery of the holiday trees utilizes Instacart's Big & Bulky fulfillment solution for large items, which the company unveiled in August. That solution enables same-day and scheduled delivery of items up to 60 pounds.
Customers can select live trees that are up to 5 feet tall, with options to have them trimmed and leveled. Instacart is allowing people to purchase artificial trees that are up to 9 feet tall.
Along with holiday trees, customers can also shop seasonal decor, ornaments, tree trimmings and lights from grocery, wholesale, home improvement and specialty stores for same-day delivery fulfilled by Instacart.
For grocery partners of Instacart, adding holiday trees further expands the number of items they can sell online through the e-commerce and delivery provider. Christmas tree spending will top $6.6 billion this year, with consumers paying an average of $85.59 for a live tree and $122.60 for an artificial one, according to Finder research.
