Instacart is piloting a program in which its independent contractors can accept in-store work on behalf of CPGs, the company said in a Friday email to Grocery Dive.
The brief tasks can include taking photos of an in-store brand display, Instacart said. The photos of products helps provide information about on-shelf inventory levels, Business Insider reported last week.
The pilot is currently running in select markets with select workers, Instacart said, without providing further information. Workers involved in the pilot can opt in to brand tasks and will see how much the task pays before deciding whether or not to accept, Instacart said. Workers are not penalized for not accepting a task.
Instacart said it is working closely with retailers during the pilot, without providing more details about what that entails.
The pilot builds on Instacart’s efforts to expand its services to CPGs, such as retail media and in-store advertising, as well as provide its independent contractors, known as Instacart Shoppers, with additional earning opportunities.
Instacart’s growth is based on diversifying the range of services it offers its retail clients as well as broadening its base of ad partners, Fidji Simo, the company’s CEO and chair, said during the Goldman Sachs Communacopia & Technology Conference in September.
