Dive Insight:
So far, more than 65,000 SNAP-eligible households have benefitted from Meijer’s reduced milk prices, and this latest effort builds on the grocer’s work to increase access to healthy, affordable foods and beverages, according to the press release.
Doubling the discount on milk expands the original initiative Meijer implemented in December as well as its work with USDA grant funding through Auburn University’s Hunger Solutions Institute.
According to Meijer, it is the only retailer within its Midwest footprint selected to partner with the “Add Milk” initiative part of the Healthy Fluid Milk Incentives established by the 2018 Farm Bill, the announcement noted. The milk discounts will remain in effect until the fall of 2026.
Milk is not the only area where Meijer is expanding the usage of SNAP. The grocer added that it will continue offering free home delivery for SNAP consumers as well as a 10% discount on SNAP purchases for qualifying produce.
In March 2023, Meijer and Flashfood, which lets shoppers buy food nearing its best-by date at a discount, expanded their partnership to include the acceptance of SNAP benefits through Flashfood’s app.
