Meijer intends to build a 90,000-square-foot Meijer Grocery store in Noblesville, Indiana, according to a Thursday tweet from the city’s government.
Plans call for construction of the supermarket — which would be a fraction of the size of the supercenters that comprise the vast majority of Meijer’s store fleet — to begin in 2023, the Indianapolis Star reported. The store is slated to be part of a development on the west side of Noblesville known as the Promenade that will also include locations run by retailers such as pharmacy chain CVS and auto parts store Pep Boys, according to a map of the real estate project posted by the Indianapolis suburb. This would be the second Meijer location in the area after its supercenter in east Noblesville.
Meijer’s media team did not respond to an emailed request for information about the new store by press time.
Meijer announced in September that it had launched a supermarket concept dubbed Meijer Grocery that would include locations between 75,000 and 90,000 square feet. The company expects to open the first two locations based on the new format near Detroit next year. The stores will stock produce, meat, seafood, deli items and health and beauty care products, Meijer said at the time.
The company first disclosed that it was planning to develop a smaller store format focused on grocery products in 2021 during a planning commission meeting in Orion Township, Michigan, where one of the new supermarkets is set to be located.
Meijer has also been developing a chain of urban-focused neighborhood food markets that average about 40,000 square feet and are designed to appeal to convenience-focused customers. The company opened the first store based on the format in 2018 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and in December announced plans for a fifth location, to be located in Cleveland.
The retailer runs more than 260 locations in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin, most of which are supercenters that carry a broad range of merchandise in addition to groceries and can top 200,000 square feet.
