Whole Foods Market veteran David Spear has joined PCC Community Markets as its vice president of merchandising, promotions and sourcing, according to a Tuesday emailed announcement.
Spear will oversee the cooperatively owned grocer’s merchandising team, which is tasked with sourcing PCC’s product offering, as well as help shape the grocer’s promotional market strategy, store experience and private label pricing strategy.
Spear brings more than two decades of experience to the Seattle-based co-op. He spent nearly 16 years at Whole Foods, most recently serving as its executive leader of operations. Prior to that, he spent five years at Chicago-based gourmet grocer Fox & Obel Market.
Spear’s onboarding follows PCC hiring three new executive team leaders at the end of 2022, including a new CFO, Marketing + Purpose vice president and IT vice president. At the beginning of 2022, PCC appointed Krishnan Srinivasan as its new president and CEO after serving as the grocer’s CFO for nearly four years.
PCC currently operates 15 grocery stores in the Puget Sound area in Washington state and has more than 115,000 members. It is the U.S.’s largest food retail co-op.
