Pro Food Systems (PFSbrands), the foodservice solutions company that operates brands like Champs Chicken and Hangar 54 Pizza, announced Tuesday that it plans to acquire mid-Missouri grocer Moser’s Foods.
The acquisition will occur through Moser’s parent company, Show Me Oil, and is expected to close in March 2025.
Moser’s Foods, an eight-store grocery chain that also operates a convenience store, will remain under local ownership and continue to operate under its brand.
PFSbrands named grocery veteran Steve Black as chief operating officer earlier in August, according to the press release. Black, who will run PFSbrands’ new retail division, has decades of experience in the food retail industry, including executive roles with Bruno’s Supermarkets, Sprouts Farmers Market, Lucky’s Market and Rouses Markets, per his LinkedIn profile.
Additionally, Clint Adams, who formerly worked as regional vice president of operations for an independent grocer in the Gulf Coast region, will join PFSbrands as senior vice president of retail store operations this February. Adams will play a “pivotal role in the transition process,” according to the release, and will assume the role of president of the retail division within PFSbrands once the deal is finalized.
The acquisition of all nine Moser’s locations “will allow [the] Moser’s legacy to continue,” Founder and President Roger Moser said in a statement, adding that all of the chain’s employees will be able to maintain their current position as well as have the opportunity to be “employee-owners” at PFSbrands.
Moser started out in the c-store business, amassing more than a dozen service stations before he opened his first grocery store in 1982. The company’s first service station, in Auxvasse, Missouri, is still open and has the longest operating Champs Chicken in-store restaurant — a brand developed by PFSbrands.
PFSbrands oversees foodservice brands like BlueTaco, Champs Chicken and Hangar 54 Pizza that operate in over 2,000 locations across 39 states, mostly in grocery and c-stores. In 2017, Founder and CEO Shawn Burcham alongside his wife, Julie, transferred ownership of the company to its employees.
