Price Chopper/Market 32 has agreed to deepen its relationship with rewards technology company Upside as the grocery chain looks to attract more shoppers and drive more sales from existing customers, the companies announced Thursday.
The grocer intends to use Upside’s tech, which provides customized promotions to shoppers, to enhance its loyalty program and encourage more shoppers to join it, according to a press release. Price Chopper/Market also plans to add the ability for shoppers to access Upside promotions without needing to submit a receipt.
Upside’s system is designed to build engagement with shoppers by providing them with cash rewards based on their spending. The company’s deal with Price Choppers/Market 32 builds on an existing arrangement between the companies under which the retailer has seen 500,000 incremental transactions from 50,000 shoppers, the announcement said.
Price Chopper/Market 32 is among a range of grocers that work with Upside. Other retailers that use the Washington, D.C.-based company’s technology include Gelson’s, Shop ’n Save, Cardenas Markets and Schnucks, which in 2021 became the first grocer to deploy Upside’s receiptless capabilities. Upside and Price Chopper/Market 32 said they expect the receiptless “check-in” tech, which eliminates the need for shoppers to submit a photo of their receipt to claim a reward, will boost reconciliation rates among users of the grocer’s loyalty program, AdvantEdge.
Price Chopper/Market 32 and Upside also said they believe the tech provider’s newly introduced direct data feed will encourage more of the grocer’s shoppers to join AdvantEdge. About a fourth of customers who used Upside’s system to earn rewards but were not members of AdvantEdge later joined the loyalty program, according to the company. Those shoppers make about one extra shopping trip to Price Chopper/Market 32 per month and spend more with the retailer than they did before joining AdvantEdge, according to the announcement.
Price Chopper operates 130 Price Chopper and Market 32 supermarkets along with one Market Bistro location in the Northeast. Upside, which rebranded two years ago, was founded in 2016.
