Dive Insight:
The newly acquired Metcalfe stores, located in Madison and Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, will keep the same storefront, branding, product assortment and “core shopper experience,” according to the announcement. SpartanNash will also continue to employ all of Metcalfe’s team members.
Additions SpartanNash is bringing in include the company’s private label offerings, like its Our Family product portfolio, as well as its loyalty and rewards program.
Metcalfe has been a family-owned and operated business for four generations, specializing in local products, sustainable practices and premium-quality foods. Former owners Tim and Kevin Metcalfe, who are the great-grandsons of Metcalfe’s founders, will join SpartanNash, per the press release.
The Wisconsin grocer’s full-time team members will continue to receive a benefits package with medical, vision and dental plans, SpartanNash noted. Employees will also receive additional investments in paid time off, wellness perks and tuition reimbursement.
SpartanNash has made several small-scale and regional acquisitions in recent years. In addition to Great Lake Foods and Shop-N-Save, the company acquired Martin’s Super Markets in 2018. The company also recently consolidated its store banners.
SpartanNash currently operates 144 brick-and-mortar grocery stores, primarily under the Family Fare, Martin’s Super Markets and D&W Fresh Market banners.
