Dive Brief:
- Walmart is offering the ingredients for an Easter meal for under $6 per person, less than it charged for a similar promotion linked to the holiday last year, the retailer announced Wednesday.
- The basket includes essentials like ham and vegetables, but does not feature eggs.
- The offer resembles the promotion Walmart ran ahead of Thanksgiving last fall, when the retailer made the components of the holiday’s traditional meal available for under $7 per person.
Dive Insight:
Walmart’s Easter meal promotion continues the retailer’s tradition of bundling foods associated with holiday meals into a package that helps it spotlight savings.
Walmart’s 2025 Easter meal promotion includes a spiral cut brown sugar ham, potatoes, asparagus, macaroni and cheese, and creme cake, and comes with enough food to feed eight. But while Walmart highlighted the fact that its Easter deal comes with a lower price this year than in 2024, the retailer did not point out in its announcement that it excludes eggs, which are closely linked to the holiday.
“Our customers are seeking more opportunities to save, and we’re committed to helping them do just that with consistently low prices every day, no matter when, where or how they shop,” John Laney, executive vice president of food for Walmart U.S., said in a statement.
The holiday deal is priced significantly lower than what Walmart charged last year for its Easter meal. That package, designed to feed 10 diners, came in at about $8 per person, but came with the ingredients for deviled eggs.
The price of eggs has been a sore spot for retailers, consumers and politicians this year, as the cost of the protein has soared amid bird flu-induced shortages. Egg prices have recently played a prominent role in pushing up grocery inflation, which held steady at a 1.9% annual clip in February but is well above levels seen during much of 2024.
Egg prices were almost 60% higher in February than they were at the same point in 2024. Recently, however, they have been coming down significantly at the wholesale level, according to a report the USDA released earlier this month. Still, it remains unclear how the expected rise in shopper demand for eggs connected with Easter will impact prices consumers pay for the food, the government said. Demand for eggs has slipped, in part because retailers have avoided promoting them to shoppers, the USDA added.
Walmart also said Wednesday that it has added limited-edition private label goods to its Bettergoods line for the holiday. The items include a plant-based Easter bunny, springtime gummies and an Easter fruit spreads combo pack, per the announcement.
