Walmart and Target are both looking to Easter to highlight their efforts to hold down costs for shoppers, continuing a drive by retailers to emphasize value as consumers remain heavily concerned about prices.
In dueling announcements Monday, the mass merchants both announced that they are offering specials in connection with the March 31 holiday that include the components of a celebratory meal for under $10 per person. The retailers are also looking to lure shoppers with low-priced Easter-oriented accessories.
Walmart said it is selling all of the items for a traditional Easter meal, including ham, ingredients for deviled eggs, sweet potatoes and apple pie, for under $8 per person on average. The retailer said that cost is below what it charged for those goods last year when it touted its decision to sell Easter essentials for the same prices it offered in 2022.
Target, meanwhile, said it is offering a full Easter meal for four people for $25, or just over $6 per person. The package includes a six-pound hickory smoked ham and side dishes such as green beans and rolls.
The company added that it is offering what it described as “budget-friendly basket fillers,” such as candy and chocolate bunnies for $2, baskets for $3 and crafts including a make-your-own-garland kit, starting at $5 each.
Walmart is selling baskets of Easter-themed treats, which include paper grass, candy and other items, for less than $20. The company said it is also stocking goods like inflatable Easter bunnies and Peeps plushies, noting that survey data it collected in February indicated that more people intend to adorn their homes to mark the holiday this year.
“Saving customers money is central to Walmart’s mission, and that’s never more in focus than during important holiday celebrations,” said John Laney, executive vice president of food for Walmart U.S., in a statement.
