Putting foods and concepts that don’t seem like they'd go together isn’t always such a bad idea. In fact, they can become extremely popular. Take a corn dog, for example, or candy apples.
The food industry is filled with examples of this phenomenon. Pop culture-inspired goods take an interesting approach, playing off multiple focuses customers may have, while Halloween always seems to be a fun time for food industry experimentation as children literally go door to door with sacks ready to be filled with all different kinds of candy.
However, some items may be too far past the norm to keep consumers interested, or just enough past it for a company to have a hit on its hands.
It’s clear the food business is ripe with off-beat flavors. From combining unlikely fruits with chocolate to soft drinks and snacks, here’s our peek at some of the more bizarre, more recent concoctions:
'Dewitos' - it's what you think it is
Apparently, having chips and a soda isn’t enough to appease people today. PepsiCo has been giving Doritos-flavored Mountain Dew - “Dewitos” - taste tests. This one’s arguably the most perplexing in terms of taste. However, considering the products’ co-consistency in U.S. homes (according to PespiCo Chief Executive Officer Indra Nooyi), perhaps there’s some worth there.
A compact Thanksgiving
“Happy Thanksgiving. Can you please pass the chips?” says rarely anyone, ever, at the Thanksgiving table - unless they're watching football, of course. But now they may be looking for these: Boulder Canyon released potato chips with Thanksgiving flavors, not that we can forget some of the Thanksgiving products we wrote about last year – including other Thanksgiving-style chip brands. Not to mention just out-there chip flavors in general. The Huffington Post praised Boulder Canyon chips’ closeness to actual Thanksgiving foods, so perhaps this isn’t so bad after all. This could go one of two ways: these are here in case one starts craving the recent feast they just had, or it can make up for the pizza and beer some family had because grandpa burned the turkey.
Fruity Oreos

While Oreo flavors can certainly reach some odd realms, nothing feels quite as strange as Watermelon Oreos, which arrived last year. Out of all the flavors to go along with a chocolate cookie, watermelon hardly seems like the right fit, though one can take their pick on this list from 11 Points.
Banana + peanut butter + Greek yogurt?
In perusing Ben & Jerry’s flavors, it’s difficult to pinpoint anything particularly awful-sounding, unless someone isn’t a fan of traditional ice cream and frozen yogurt flavors. But Banana Peanut Butter - made with real Greek yogurt - gives us pause. While bananas and peanut butter may be a common combination, that duo in frozen yogurt might prove too flavorful.
Last (and probably least): Bubble gum broccoli
We take it back: This one is the most perplexing. McDonald’s gave bubble gum-flavored broccoli a chance at the testing stage. “It wasn't all that," McDonald’s Chief Executive Officer Don Thompson said. Not only do these two flavors not even remotely go together, but not many kids will even try broccoli based on looks alone. And one is left guessing that the opposite - broccoli-flavored bubble gum - wouldn’t fare well, either.
