Dive Brief:
- Indiana’s first Meijer Grocery store opened on Thursday, marking the second state where the regional grocer has brought the smaller format.
- Located at 5956 Promenade Shops Blvd. in Noblesville, Indiana, the new store offers a fresh food department, deli counter, bakery and full pharmacy.
- The Noblesville store is the third under the retailer’s Meijer Grocery format, which debuted at the start of last year with two locations in Michigan.
Dive Insight:
Plans for the store first became public in October 2022, when the city’s government tweeted about Meijer’s plans for a 90,000-square-foot store — a fraction of the size of Meijer supercenters which average between 150,000 and 250,000 square feet.
The Noblesville Meijer Grocery houses a Heartland Bakery, which offers freshly baked bread, and a Northside Deli, the Hamilton Country Reporter Newspaper reported Monday. The store also has a wine aisle and Costa Express coffee vending machine that lets shoppers use a touchscreen to mix and match coffee beans and milk to create specialty drinks.
In addition to food and beverage products, the new location also includes a full-service pharmacy with a drive-thru and also offers health and beauty, baby and pet products. The local news reports also noted that there is a greeting cards section towards the store’s entrance.
The grocer has plans to open a second Meijer Grocery in the state in Fishers, an Indianapolis suburb. The store would be smaller, spanning 75,000 square feet.
Meijer Grocery isn’t the only smaller-concept store the grocery company is experimenting with. In January, Meijer opened its first neighborhood market outside its home state of Michigan. Located in Cleveland, Ohio, the store is 40,000 square feet and offers more than 2,000 local products.
